greening it up – fri 15 Dec 06Submitted by sproutingforth on Fri, 2006-12-15 10:31
cool green news from around the world: I’m tired of gloom & doom. There is a lot that’s happening in the news that is positive so today I’m making an effort to bring you what’s cool.
SA set to go green for 2010 –of course the first line should warn you as to the watered-down nature of just how green we’re going – ‘as green as possible’, says Marthinus kortbroek, who wants to reduce the environmental impact of this year’s World Cup held in Germany including a carbon offset campaign – now this would be cool! [M&G] Someone’s made a sustainable chair from human hair – I kid you not. And it’s a really cool design. [Hippyshopper] Business Week has decided ‘Green is Good’ and has named green building one of The Best Ideas of 2006. Some of the buildings mentioned are: Adobe’s new Silicon Valley headquarters and Google’s installation of solar panels at its Mountain View headquarters. [hugg] Italian scientists have developed a solar panel that uses the pigment of blueberries, instead of silicon – yup, that’s the actual berry and nothing to do with Vodacom's blackberry. [hugg] And the Environmental Conservation Association has charged Acsa with criminal neglect for the three fuel spills at OR Tambo airport – way to go for the greenies! What’s more, they’re holding individuals accountable for their actions. [IOL] Finally, a green tip - Save a tree, send an e-card this ‘xmas - a ton of carbon is released for every tree cut down that is one foot in diameter and 40 feet tall. Choose a picture for your e-card [Friends of the Earth] ( categories: )
