inspiring change gatheringSubmitted by JimmySprout on Thu, 2011-11-17 12:38
Running concurrently with the Green Expo this weekend (18th - 20th Nov), the Cape Town Climate Change Coalition is hosting a gathering called Inspiring Change. Held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from 18 – 20 November 2011, this series of talks and demonstrations aims to stimulate fresh thinking and to share ideas about our city. The gathering includes several cool aspects including the Siemens electric mobility roadshow, Pecha Kucha sessions, inspiring panellists deliberating on Cape Town's role in climate change solutions, site visits and a Carotmob. The travelling exhibition by Siemens has already been in many parts of the world and makes its drive the greenway, not the highwaySubmitted by JimmySprout on Tue, 2011-11-15 12:41
With petrol prices on the rise (again), here are 10 easy ways to save big on petrol bills (and help save the environment of course!) The best way to save fuel is not to use it at all It might be old news and becoming a bit repetitive, but yes, really think about when you use your car and why. Could you walk or cycle to where you need to be? Why not take a train or bus? (The Gautrain is fantastic and Cape Town’s MyCiti bus system is reliable and affordable). Slow down Schumacher! Speeding is probably the most common way the majority of us use excessive amounts of fuel. In many ( categories: )
cycle to work this ‘transport month’Submitted by ConsciousBabe on Mon, 2011-10-17 11:19
Bike to work this Transport Month and be part of the solution. With most of the worlds population now living in cities, it is no news to say that traffic congestion has become a huge urban problem, as is the pollution and accidents caused by motor vehicles. With the added fear of climate change and peak oil, there has arisen an urgent need for a social shift towards more sustainable mobility use. The City of Cape Town recognises October as "Transport Month" and last week hosted a couple of events focussing on Public Transport Interchanges (PTI). A PTI is a facility where commuters can ( categories: )
rocking the daisies - how green is green?Submitted by ConsciousBabe on Wed, 2011-10-12 08:42
Conscious Babe believes youth deserve more of a chance at self-responsibility where the environment is concerned.
Seems that Rocking The Daisies are really putting their money where their mouth is regarding green, setting them apart from your average South African rock festival. Reminiscent of the UK festivals I have attended, I saw numerous green initiatives at the festival this last weekend. Mathias and girlfriend Zola from MLT drives were giving away solar-popped corn next to the dam, you could charge your phone using the wind generator and some of the stalls were powered by solar power (both provided by Earth Power), a team of 15 were sorting much of the recycling on site, the rest of which was sent to the local Malmesbury recycling centre, all the food stalls used ( categories: )
abandon your car, get on yer bikeSubmitted by turbosprout on Fri, 2011-05-13 09:21
The Big Ride In, however, is not about a race or tour and extends beyond the traditional cycling community. It is about ordinary citizens taking back their power - realising that mobililty is not just about cars or taxis. Lots of Argus contenders will know that the original Argus Cycle Tour as envisaged back in 1977 was a show of solidarity for the rights of cyclists and for more cycle lanes to be created in the City of Cape Town. The founding fathers of the original Argus, staged a Big Ride In to guilt free green ridesSubmitted by sproutnewb on Mon, 2011-03-07 10:25
