ATHLONE POWER STATION LOCATION TO BE CONVERTED TO WIND FARM

South Africa’s leading energy supplier has announced that, in conjunction with the City of Cape Town, it will be converting the old Athlone coal fired power station into a wind farm filled with eight new 1.5MW wind turbines.

It indicated that the implosion of the old power station is a symbol of its commitment to clean energy and plans to convert all existing coal fired powered stations into renewable energy sources by 2016.

Public Relations Officer Mark Schoon explained the rationale: "Although cheap in terms of money, coal fired energy is currently the most polluting form of energy generation as well as being the heaviest user of water. Emissions from coal-fired plants have substantial impacts on both air quality and global climate change."

Some 92,8% of South Africa's power is derived from coal, a higher percentage than most countries, according to Engineering News. And much of South Africa's transport fuel is also derived from coal, making the domestic economy one of the world's most carbon heavy globally. In the last financial year, according to the publication, Eskom burnt some 122,7-million tons of coal and produced 224,7-million tons of CO2 equal to just over 50% of the country’s total CO2 emissions. This ensures that South Africa maintain its position as the 12th highest polluter in the world, just above Mexico.

"Coal fired power plants also emit substantial amounts of sulfur dioxide (SO2), a precursor of fine particulate and acid rain, and of nitrogen oxides (NOx), a precursor of tropospheric ozone as well as particulate, in addition to producing other pollutants such as mercury and solid waste." Schoon remarked that all these problems could be rectified by using various forms of alternative energy sources, resulting in significant improvement in health care and environmental impacts and cost. “It is time to make a switch to clean energy”

The Athlone station was commissioned in 1962 and was operated by the City of Cape Town. There are currently thirteen coal fired power stations in South Africa, ten of which are in operation and all run by Eskom. Most are situated in Mpumalanga.

Note to Editors: South Africa’s leading energy supplier has operations in several African countries. The company is committed to providing clean and renewable energy, to fostering independence from parastatal monopolies and from corporate interests.

If you're still with us and have checked to make sure it's not April 1st, then read the release again whilst we wait for someone to come "schoon" ;-)

Full Moon?

I was checking the date and though it's not April 1st, I was wondering whether it was brought on by the influence of the full moon!

If Eskom and more clean wind power is a genuine development, then this is great news!

I find it a bit difficult to

I find it a bit difficult to believe, since the area is too small for 8 turbines. It is a well known fact that there is a certain amount of turbulence directly behind the turbine when it is in motion.

That will mean that when two turbines were erected directly behind each other, there must be a reasonable distance between them. The site is definitely not big enough for that - especially not for the way the image seems to indicate.

Why not do it like the wind farm out at sea between Denmark and Sweden? False Bay is big enough to line them up nicely across the bay without interfering with major sea traffic.

It's way too expensive...

Constructing an offshore wind farm is too costly and we do not have the infrastructure or the capable human resources, not forgetting the available funding to do so.

We could possibly have an offshore windfarm, but then the Government and Eskom would need to open the market to international players like VESTAS, DONG, WATENVALL etc. who have successfully constructed offshore wind farms. Even then, it still be costly...just look at the costs of the London Array...

Doesnt make sense

It is also strange how the massive generator buildings have been left out of the pics. These would cause huge sideways and vertical wind turbulence issues. A definite no-no for wind turbines.
Also I thought that the site was owned and previously run by the City. Not Eksdom.
Very suspect news.

Eskom, dit is nou tyd dat

Where did you get this media

Where did you get this media release from? I see no sign of it on Eskom's website. I think that someone is taking you for a ride...

The point of this project is

The point of this project is not so much efficient energy production, but rather an image upgrade.

This creates an image of Eskom as a "green" company, regardless of the scale.

One thing is concerning me; the noise level. I live in Pinelands, and on some nights, sound from Athlone Stadium can keep me awake. We'll probably get used to it soon though.

I think it should rather just be three much larger turbines; taller for a more pronounced image.
