'aviation estate' for malmesbury – the battle continuesSubmitted by sproutingforth on Thu, 2009-03-19 09:27
“The intention is to have 371 erven and further hangars for hire. Translated that means at least 371 aeroplanes, helicopters, gyrocopters etc. continuously landing and taking off alongside the R302 south of Malmesbury en route to Klipheuwel. This delightful prospect will include a 1.2 kilometre runway, helicopter pads and landing sites, fuel storage facilities, filling stations, control towers and other buildings, as well as large swathes of grassed areas.” We've just had the latest update from those challenging the development, who let us know that the proposal has gone ahead to the scoping stage. From the scoping document it's clear that the proposal is even worse than previously thought... The aviation estate is set to include about 370 houses (277 of which have their own hangars for helicoptors, gyrocoptors and other leisure craft), taxi ways, control tower, fuel storage, restaurant, guest house, 2.1 km runway and so on. Ouch! It is proposed that aircraft of all descriptions - even jets – be allowed to fly day and night. There is also an application for port of entry under consideration. I'm not surprised that the neighbouring farms and locals living in and around Malmesbury are up in arms about noise, air pollution and safety. Nevermind the loss of a sense of country to the entire region! And a further concern: if this proposal goes through, it sets a precedent for the entire country. A voluntary association, called the Swartland Forum - has been formed to challenge the development and a public meeting is being held this evening – Thurs 19 march at 18h00 in the Wesbank Hall in Malmesbury. Noise levels
If I was living in this area I too would have a huge issue with this. If i am living on a quiet farm by choice and now my peace and quiet is going to disappear and its going to disturb my animals then I have a problem with this. I just hope that the people of Malmesbury win this fight and get to keep their peace and quiet
